Mpumalanga Launches Provincial Council on GBVF: A United Stand Against Gender-Based Violence
On February 19, 2025, Mpumalanga took a decisive step in addressing the scourge of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) with the official launch of the Provincial Council on GBVF. This landmark initiative represents a bold commitment to eradicating GBVF and ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of all individuals in the province.

The Honourable Premier Mandla Ndlovu reaffirmed the province’s dedication to tackling GBVF head-on, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between government, civil society, and community leaders. His leadership continues to unite forces across various sectors, driving meaningful change in the fight against GBVF.
Adding their voices to this crucial conversation, MEC S. Manzini of the Department of Health emphasized the role of the healthcare sector in supporting survivors, while Mayor N.G. Zuma of the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality addressed the responsibility of local government in fostering safe communities.
Traditional leadership plays a key role in shaping societal attitudes, and Chief Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena, President of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa), spoke on the need to challenge harmful cultural norms and advocate for progressive change.
From civil society, Ms. D. Moyana from World of Impact brought forward the importance of grassroots initiatives in preventing GBVF and supporting survivors. Meanwhile, Ms. Nandi Shongwe from the Office of the Premier outlined the provincial strategies being put in place to combat GBVF effectively.
