A Grade 11 learner from Mbombela is preparing to represent South Africa at one of the world’s most prestigious science competitions, and you can help him bring home an international honour.
Sinenhlanhla Sikhulile Nkosi, from Sitintile Secondary School, made history by becoming the first learner from Mpumalanga to win the South African Youth Water Prize. His innovative project, “Barrier Coatings for Reducing Microplastic Release and Chemical Leaching in Plastic Containers,” has earned him a place at the Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden.
Now, he’s in the running for the People’s Choice Award, where public votes from around the world will help determine the winner.
His project focuses on a specially developed coating that lines the inside of PET plastic bottles, helping reduce the release of microplastics and harmful chemicals into drinking water. It’s an innovative solution to a growing environmental challenge and one that has already impressed judges in South Africa.
