In Memoriam: David Dabede Mabuza (1960–2025)
“A life of service. A legacy of leadership.”
It is with deep sadness that RISE fm marks the passing of David Dabede Mabuza, former Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa and a proud son of Mpumalanga. Born on 25 August 1960 in the rural community of Phola near Waterval Boven, Mabuza rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential political figures in post-apartheid South Africa.
Fondly known to many as “The Cat,” DD Mabuza’s journey was one defined by resilience, quiet strength, and a deep-rooted commitment to education and community development. Before entering the national stage, he served as an educator — a role that shaped his values and left an indelible mark on his approach to leadership.
Mabuza was the Premier of Mpumalanga from 2009 to 2018, and during that time, he focused on expanding access to education, rural development, and public health. His passion for empowering young people, especially in the province he called home, remained a hallmark of his political career. In 2018, he was appointed as the Deputy President of South Africa, where he served until 2023.
A firm believer in unity, Mabuza was often seen as a bridge-builder — someone who preferred to work behind the scenes to resolve tensions and bring people together.
As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his contributions — the schools built, the roads opened, the lives touched. He leaves behind a legacy of public service that will continue to shape Mpumalanga and the nation for generations to come.
RISE fm extends its deepest condolences to the Mabuza family, his friends, colleagues, and all who walked alongside him. May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing.
