dcsr youth day

Fifty years after the events of 16 June 1976 changed the course of South African history, Mpumalanga will gather in Perdekop to commemorate the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of the youth who stood up against injustice.

The provincial commemoration will take place on Monday, 15 June 2026, at the Perdekop Sport Ground in the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality, beginning at 08:00.

Premier Mandla Ndlovu will deliver the keynote address as government leaders, communities and young people come together under the theme:

“Our National Commitment to the Future, for Freedom Lives in Every Generation.”

The programme will include a fun walk, entertainment and access to government services, creating a day that combines remembrance with community engagement.

A turning point in South African history

On 16 June 1976, thousands of schoolchildren in Soweto marched in protest against the apartheid government’s decision to enforce Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in schools. What began as a peaceful demonstration was met with violence, leading to the deaths of many young people and sparking a nationwide uprising.

Images of young victims such as Hector Pieterson became symbols of resistance and drew international attention to the brutality of apartheid. The events of 1976 marked a turning point in South Africa’s liberation struggle and highlighted the central role that young people would continue to play in shaping the country’s future.

Half a century later, the story of 1976 remains a reminder that the freedoms enjoyed today were won through the courage and determination of ordinary young South Africans who refused to accept injustice.

Remembering the past, building the future

This year’s 50th anniversary carries special significance. Beyond honouring those who participated in the uprisings, the commemoration seeks to encourage a new generation to reflect on the responsibilities that accompany freedom.

For Mpumalanga, the event represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of democracy while reaffirming a commitment to creating opportunities for young people through education, skills development, employment and active citizenship.

As communities gather in Perdekop, the province will pay tribute to the spirit of 1976 and to the generations that continue to shape South Africa’s story.

RISE fm joins the commemoration

RISE fm will be part of the day’s proceedings, with The Midday Escape with Mpumi Mbethe broadcasting live from the event.

As South Africa marks five decades since one of the defining moments in its history, the voices of 1976 continue to echo through the generations, reminding the nation that freedom is both a legacy to honour and a responsibility to protect.
