SolarFlair from Mpumalanga is returning to the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge.
SolarFlair, a solar-powered vehicle born from a dream and dedication and is returning for the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge.
The most significant funding for the car has come from team members. We do not have backing from big institutions/universities, yet we compete against them. MMC kindly covered the entry fee for the challenge.
We have a car and now we are almost ready for Secunda, but we need your support on various levels of this race.
The Origin Story: The journey of SolarFlair began with Klaas Botha’s vision and Mark Schormann’s support and input, to create a solar-powered car for the bi-annual Sasol Solar Challenge. Starting with a simple balsawood model, SolarFlair evolved into a competitive solar car.
Our debut in the 2022 Sasol Solar Challenge, where we raced from Carnival City Hotel and Casino in Gauteng to the Waterfront in Cape Town over eight days, set the stage for our ambitious goals. We won the rookie award.
Our Vision for 2024: The SolarFlair Team is back with two cars – the first called SolarFlair 2 (aka Razr) is the successor to the original SolarFlair from 2022, and the second is Carpe Diem, which contains parts of the original 2022 car. Both cars are ready to compete in the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge. SolarFlair 2 is participating in the Challenger Class and Carpe Diem in the Innovation Class. This year, our goal is not only to perform well but to continue showcasing the power of solar technology in transportation.
The challenge, running from September 13 to September 20, will test our car’s efficiency and our team’s endurance as we travel from Secunda to Cape Town. Going beyond 2024, our goal is to participate in the World Solar Challenge in Australia in 2025.
