‘Decision to dissolve medical union is illegal’

Cosatu has again demanded that the decision to dissolve Samatu, the union arm of the SA Medical Association, be reversed and that financial records of the association be made transparent.

Speaking at the Cosatu headquarters in Johannesburg , Mpho Pooe, deputy chairman of Samatu, said the move had been illegal as proper steps were not followed.

“It must be noted that such a resolution was never raised by the provincial executive committee or the national executive committee.

“No congress adopted such a resolution, therefore the people who purported to have the powers to run the affairs of the trade union are primarily not members of the trade union but a nonprofit company,” said Pooe.

Freda Oosthuysen, Cosatu’s national treasurer, said the trade union federation was also seeking to get access to all financial records of the medical association as it suspected irregularities.
