Winnie Madikizela-Mandela loses her bid for ownership of the Qunu home

Winnie Madikizela- Mandela’s application regarding the ownership of former President Nelson Mandela’s home in Qunu in the Eastern Cape has been dismissed.

The judge at the Mthatha High Court took less than a minute to read out the judgement this morning. The judge stated that the application is dismissed and that Madikizela-Mandela had to pay costs.

The three executors of Nelson Mandela’s Estate, opposed Madikizela- Mandela’s bid, arguing  that she had no claim to the property as she was divorced from the former president of South Africa.

However Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyer claimed that the property belonged to her under the abaThembu customs, which dictated the rights to the property should go to her as she was still married to Nelson Mandela under customary law.

It is yet still unclear whether Madikizela-Mandela will appeal todays ruling or perhaps accept defeat.
